The PGA has announced that Gavin Kavanagh will become PGA Captain in March 2027, succeeding David Llewellyn. An Honorary Member of The PGA since 2021, Kavanagh joins a distinguished list of past Captains that includes PGA co-founders James Braid, Harry Vardon, and JH Taylor, as well as legendary figures such as Sir Henry Cotton, Dai Rees, Bernard Gallacher, and Peter Alliss.

A Career Rooted in Dedication

Kavanagh began his professional journey in 1994 and has since built a career defined by excellence both on and off the course. After completing the PGA Training Programme, he was appointed PGA Head Professional at Delgany Golf Club in 1995 — a role he has held with distinction for nearly three decades.

Throughout that time, Gavin has developed a thriving pro shop and coaching business at Delgany, earning widespread recognition as one of PGA in Ireland’s most respected coaches. His commitment to continuous learning has seen him complete the PGA Director of Golf Qualification in 2014 and achieve Fellow status within his category of PGA Professional.

Leadership and Service to The PGA

Kavanagh’s involvement with The PGA extends far beyond his day-to-day professional duties. His leadership within the Association has been longstanding and impactful — serving as Captain of The PGA in Ireland in 2005, Chairman from 2007 to 2012, and a member of the Irish Regional Committee for 14 years. He has also contributed at national level, representing Members on The PGA Board.

Speaking on his appointment, Alan White, Chairman of The PGA, praised Gavin’s professionalism and contribution:

“The role of PGA Captain is both an honour and a responsibility, and Gavin joins a select group of individuals who have represented the Association with pride.
Throughout his career, he has demonstrated the professionalism, integrity, and passion that define what it means to be a PGA Member. He’s built a lasting legacy as a coach, a leader within the Association, and a tireless advocate for charitable causes.”

Commitment to Community and Charity

Beyond his professional achievements, Gavin has made a significant impact through his charitable work, particularly in support of Down Syndrome awareness and support initiatives. His fundraising efforts — including the long-running Delgany Pro-Am tournament — have raised over €500,000 for charity, reflecting his deep sense of community and compassion.

Looking Ahead to 2027

For Kavanagh, the Captaincy represents the pinnacle of a lifelong connection with The PGA:

“It is definitely the highlight of my personal and professional life to be PGA Captain for 2027. I will put my heart and soul into the role to champion the everyday life of my fellow PGA Members who are dedicated to delivering excellence in the game of golf.”

He went on to emphasise his commitment to representing The PGA’s core values:

“The PGA represents everything that’s great about golf — professionalism, integrity, inclusion, and continued learning. I hope to bring experience, dedication, and approachability to the role, supporting Members at every stage of their careers.”

A Legacy of Excellence

As The PGA continues to evolve, Gavin Kavanagh’s leadership stands as a reflection of its enduring values and vision for the future. His appointment as Captain is both a celebration of a remarkable career and a testament to his unwavering dedication to the game and its people.

With decades of experience, a deep connection to the PGA community, and an unshakeable commitment to excellence, Gavin Kavanagh will lead The PGA into 2027 with pride, purpose, and passion.
